Susan recently joined our office as a Family Practice Nurse Practitoner. A rural Harford County native, Susan is a North Harford High graduate. She went on to complete her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Villa Julie College (Stevenson University). From there she started work as a nurse at one of the nation’s highest acuity intensive care units, the Surgical ICU at University of Maryland Medical Center.
Susan decided that there was more she could do to save her patients; by intervening in the primary care setting before they reached the intensive care unit. While completing her graduate studies at University of Maryland as a Family Nurse Practitioner she continued working at UMMC as a supplemental staff ICU nurse. She started each day in a new unit and adapted to the needs of the patients and staff she was assigned to her care. Her experience and knowledge expanded with rotations in the Trauma Recitation Unit, Neuro Trauma ICU, Trauma PACU, UMMC PACU, Cardiac Surgery ICU and stepdown, Cardiac ICU, Medical ICU, Neuro ICU and UMMC Emergency Room. As she neared the end of her graduate studies she worked with the inpatient Pain Management Service.
Susan also has a deep passion for education. She completed a Post Masters Teaching Certificate in Nursing and Health Professions to enable her to mentor the next generation of nurses. She has taught clinical rotations at Towson University as well as didactic and simulation lab at Harford Community College.
She holds affiliations with The Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Sigma Theta Tau-The National Honor Society of Nursing, Villa Julie College - Union Memorial Hospital Alumni Association. She holds current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification, as well as current American Heart Association Healthcare Providers CPR certification. She is registered as a National Certified Medical Examiner for DOT examinations.
Susan joins us after years of patient care at another rural family practice. She is excited to balance her family and professional life here in Hampstead. She and her husband have two young children and she enjoys caring for patients in the community in which she lives. Susan has a personal connection with diabetes and enjoys helping her diabetic patients conquer obstacles and educate themselves on healthier lifestyles. She also has a passion for the next generation, hoping to use the advances in medical science and information technology as well as the hard work of previous generations to make her youngest patients healthy and happy in ways never known to those before them.
